Why I Built Momentum: A Personal Kanban + SMS Habit System

Momentum did not come from a dramatic breaking point. I built it because I wanted a custom tool for everyday execution: part reminder app, part Kanban-style task manager, and fully tuned to my own workflow.

The goal was simple. I wanted something that felt lightweight and intuitive, but still had enough structure to keep me consistent.

The Core Idea

Momentum merges the simplicity of Kanban-style workflows with real life. Instead of becoming another complicated productivity system, it focuses on a clear flow for practical tasks and recurring habits.

I wanted a system that could remind me repeatedly when it mattered, especially for habit tasks. I use it for both project-related tasks and personal everyday tasks.  For example, I can set a recurring evening reminder to brush my teeth, and Momentum will keep sending me a daily reminder every evening.  I can just respond with a simple 'Done' to let it know that task is complete.

Why SMS Is Central

I check SMS more than anything else. That makes it the most reliable channel for reminders, and honestly, the nudge is stronger there. If a reminder lands in text, I am more likely to act on it quickly.

This is why Momentum is not just a board UI. The reminder loop is part of the product itself.

How It Was Built

Task flow came first, but the rest was built in rapid sequence. The architecture evolved quickly around one question: does this help me do the task now, not just organize it?

Momentum stayed personal by design. It is currently my own task tracking app. The future is open, and if people are interested, they can reach out.

Provider Pivot: Twilio to VoIP.ms Support

I started with Twilio, but ran into friction with Twilio ID verification when moving toward production. Instead of blocking on one vendor path, I added support for VoIP.ms as well.  I'll add VoIP.ms has been great to work with.

That made the system more practical for real-world use and gave Momentum flexibility at the delivery layer.

What Matters Most

The most important outcomes for Momentum are consistency and simplicity.

The feature I am most proud of is not a technical abstraction. It is that Momentum actually helped change my habits.

What Comes Next

I do not have a fixed roadmap right now. Momentum is still being shaped by real use.

For now, it is doing exactly what I wanted: turning everyday intentions into repeatable action.

If this resonates and you want to see where Momentum goes next, reach out.  I may make it open-source at some point in the future.
